“Feeling No Pain”; Differential Responses to Pain by Alcoholics and Nonalcoholics Before and After Drinking

SUMMARY. Whisky reduced the level of pain reported by alcoholics but had no effect on that reported by nonalcoholics. The results appear to be based on the joint effects of the alcoholic’s expectation that alcohol has an analgesic effect and the physiological cues accompanying alcohol consumption.
