SUMMARY. Tobacco has been available to Micronesians for over a century and has become thoroughly interwoven into their lives. In 1976, 29% of import tax revenues in the U.S. Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands was derived from tobacco and 35 % from alcoholic beverages.
