The Effects of Ethanol and Acetaldehyde on Dog Arterial Smooth Muscle

Noboru Toda, Makoto Konishi, Mizuo Miyazaki, Setsuo Komura

SUMMARY. Studies on isolated dog mesenteric arteries show that ethanol possesses vasoconstrictor actions which would not be mediated by specific drug receptors and that ethanol-induced potentiation of responses to nerve stimulation results from an enhancement of muscle contractility. Acetaldehyde appears to release vasodilator prostaglandins from the wall of dog arteries, and to interfere with norepinephrine release from adrenergic nerves.
