SUMMARY. The history of the recognition of alcoholism as a multidisciplinary social problem from the late 19th century through the evolution of the Center of Alcohol Studies is described, highlighting the men who brought the field prominence. The nature of alcoholism, viewed from an interdisciplinary perspective, is outlined.
