Glucose Tolerance in Alcoholics

SUMMARY. Oral glucose tolerance was impaired in most alcoholics having cirrhosis or fatty liver but was normal in patients in whom liver biopsy indicated only minimal changes. Abnormalities in plasma glucagon, insulin and nonesterified fatty acid levels and reduced insulin sensitivity did not correlate with impaired glucose tolerance.
