Alcoholism as a Folk Disease; The Paradox of Beliefs and Choice of Therapy in an Urban American Community

SUMMARY. A survey of 328 respondents in a middle-class community in Chicago revealed no consensus regarding the causes and symptoms of alcoholism and a rejection of any form of professional therapeutic intervention. It is suggested that alcoholism may be usefully designated a folk disease.
